BACKGROUND
The Salk Institute is regularly rated in the world’s top three leading biomedical research organizations, and provides a unique environment to support breakthrough discoveries in this fundamental area of biology.
The Hetzer laboratory is studying the organization of the nuclear genome in the three-dimensional (3D) space of the nucleus and its emerging role in gene regulation as well as its fundamental importance for our understanding of normal and pathological cell function. The spatial organization of the genome varies among cell types and lineage-specific 3D interactions of genomic loci have been observed during normal and pathological cell differentiation. A major unanswered question is whether the observed changes in spatial genome organization are a consequence of altered gene expression or whether they represent a yet uncharacterized mechanism of gene regulation. Next-gen sequencing technologies now allow a global view of DNA organization, and imaging and perturbation probes allow a dynamic view of DNA conformation and its functional impact. This interdisciplinary group offers a powerful environment to uncover new fundamental principles and regulatory mechanisms in this emerging area of genome biology.RESPONSIBILITIES
The Salk Institute is looking for a highly motivated individual to lead the exploration of the spatial organization of the genome within the eukaryotic nucleus. This is a joint position between several laboratories at the Salk institute with interest in nuclear organization, transcriptional control, cancer biology, bioinformatics and genomics including the Razavi Newman Center for Bioinformatics headed by Dr. Gerard Manning, and the laboratory of Dr. Martin Hetzer. The project will be performed in close collaboration with the group of Dr. Joe Ecker to generate massive amounts of methylome, RNA-seq and chromatin configuration (chromosome conformation capture, 5C and Hi-C) sequence data.REQUIREMENTS
We are hiring at various levels including PhD student, research associate, staff scientist or consultant. Candidates should have:
- A strong background in math/computer science, particularly in topology, geometry and/or graph theory, with a demonstrated ability to design and implement algorithms in working code
- An extensive grounding in bioinformatics and genomics, including understanding of genomic structure, expression control, molecular evolution and comparative genomics; ability to handle very large datasets, proficiency with scripting languages and bioinformatics toolkits such as BioPerl
- Coursework and practical experience in applying statistical and/or data mining approaches to complex and noisy biological data
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills to take advantage of the highly collaborative environment, adaptability and willingness to contribute to the overall goals of the project and bioinformatics center
- A passion for innovation, and demonstrated initiative in tackling new areas of research and in leading a major project
