RESPONSIBILITIES
Applicant will be responsible for the maintenance of three different servers: one 8 node MAC Cluster, one Linux web-server, and one Linux database server for a UCDavis bioinformatics research laboratory. Applicant will also be responsible for several workstations in the office (the majority of these are Macs). Maintenance of servers includes, but is not limited to: updating PostgreSQL/MySQL databases, maintenance of LAMP/MAMP environment, patching, security, user accounts, software installs, regular backups, status reports, detailed online documentation. Applicant will be responsible for educating and guiding new users through UNIX, assisting with X-windows connections, file formatting, transferring files, and sending jobs to the cluster. Applicant will be responsible for monitoring servers and responding onsite if the systems go down.REQUIREMENTS
- Applicant must have at least two years experience with Unix system administration and at least two years experience with Mac OS X.
- Applicant must be proficient with Apache and at least two web languages (i.e. PHP, ASP), one programming language (i.e. C, Java, PERL), proficient with shell scripting, and experienced with the maintenance of a cluster.
- Applicant should have experience with at least one database platform (i.e. Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL), and and be comfortable with creating and editing websites.
- Applicant should have excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Detailed documentation will be required often, both online and offline.
PREFERENCES
- Experience with bioinformatics applications is a PLUS (particularly: BLAST, R, phylogenetics, etc.).
TERMS
This is a contract position with the University of California at Davis for 15-20 hours/week. Telecommuting is OK. Applicant will be expected to be onsite if the servers fail and at least 1-2x's per month to maintain desktop machines.SALARY & COMPENSATION
