BACKGROUND
SAIC-Frederick, Inc., the operations and technical support contractor for the NCI-Frederick, has an exciting opportunity for a Director of our Bioinformatics Core. The Advanced Biomedical Computing Center (ABCC) is part of the Information Systems Program at SAIC-Frederick (SAIC-F). The ABCC provides technology development, scientific consultation, collaboration and training, and high-performance computing support to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) scientists and staff.RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director, Bioinformatics Core will be responsible for directing the Bioinformatics Core, which is comprised of the support teams tasked with providing cutting-edge collaborative support to the NCI Center for Cancer Research scientific community. Duties include coordination of efforts across SAIC-F bioinformatics support teams as well as other bioinformatics support groups throughout the NCI. The coordination effort will be used to provide project prioritization and communications with both the NCI and SAIC-F management. Also responsible for developing and managing relationships with principal investigators and their laboratories and identification of candidate applications and methods for technology development efforts.
Responsible for providing requirements towards anticipated technological changes that will impact computational and storage requirements as well as require additional support resources or reassignment of existing resources. Coordinate and integrate bioinformatics teams with existing efforts within the larger group including the Bethesda, Frederick, Rockville, and Gaithersburg NCI campuses. Work with SAIC-F and NCI management to develop and execute roadmap to accommodate new initiatives and technologies. Develop metrics and produce monthly reports of the overall level of team engagement and current projects underway.REQUIREMENTS
- Possession of a Masters degree in life sciences, computer science, or relevant field or six (6) years related experience in lieu of degree. Ph.D. degree in relevant field strongly preferred.
- In addition to educational requirements, a minimum of eight (8) years progressively responsible experience in the bioinformatics field, including three (3) years in a leadership role.
- Must be able to develop and maintain a strong team environment and manage complex bioinformatics and data analysis projects; understand and assess new high-throughput technologies and requirements; assimilate the concept of new applications and relate them to the overall organization bioinformatics support environments; and coordinate and develop solutions to complex problems in a diverse support environment.
- Must possess highly effective skills to communicate clearly with all levels of scientific personnel, administrative, and executive staff through written and oral presentations.
- Detail-oriented and strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks/projects. Project management, resource allocation, and report generation are essential for the success of this position.
- This position is subject to obtaining a Public Trust Clearance.
