As the vaccines division of the sanofi-aventis Group, sanofi pasteur is devoted exclusively to the research, production, and worldwide distribution of human vaccines. To date, our wide range of vaccines provides protection against 20 bacterial and viral diseases around the world. We distribute more than a billion doses of vaccine each year, making it possible to vaccinate more than 500 million people across the globe. Our Worldwide Headquarters is located in Lyon, France, and we have a global presence across 150 countries.
Acambis Campus, part of the sanofi pasteur company, is a leading vaccine company developing novel vaccines that address significant unmet medical needs or substantially improve standards of care. RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Bioinformatics & Genomics Department in Discovery Research is looking for an individual who will be responsible for all aspects of building in silico analysis pipelines in support of vaccine discovery and invention. The candidate will integrate heterogeneous data sets from reference databases and in-house studies in the domains of infectious diseases and immunology. In the context of a multidisciplinary team environment, the ideal candidate will build a strategic bioinformatics infrastructure to enable the creation of data integration, modeling, visualization and analysis pipelines. The candidate will lead the development of a data management infrastructure capable of addressing the dynamic semantics of relevant biological data, including the specification and development of data models in the context of ontologically-driven systems biology approaches to host-pathogen interactions, immune function and related areas of vaccinology.
Duties:
- Conducts research in support of multiple vaccine development programs
- Uses highly developed organizational skills to prioritize work load and achieve objectives for multiple projects within allocated timelines and budgetary limits
- Leads the development of computational infrastructure to support and respond to project requirements
- Specifies and develops data models and ontologies, integrates bioinformatics and other data as necessary from public and internal sources
- Creates and uses in silico pipelines for data integration, analysis and visualization in response to team and project requirements
- Assists in the development of data-driven network models of host-pathogen interactions at the molecular and cellular level, using mathematical modeling, simulation and statistical data analysis methods
- Works with internal scientists and external collaborators to stream data sets, including high-throughput data, into flexible data structures that reflect generic and specific project requirements, and that will support model development and refinement
- Identifies, explores and adopts as appropriate novel data management techniques and technologies, including data mining
- Ensures the accurate documentation and recording of methods development and in silico results, in compliance with required procedures
- Devises and interprets own analyses, uses a combination of scientific and business software to prepare data for written and verbal presentations, technical reports, scientific manuscripts and contributes to preparation of Regulatory filings
- Supervises daily activities of external contractors and manages external collaborations and professional service contracts, ensuring quality of work and deliverables is met
- Provides effective liaison with relevant internal support functions, including Intellectual Property, Business Development, and Information Solutions, as required
- Works effectively as part of a multidisciplinary project team, putting in the necessary effort to help the team achieve objectives and to keep the team to deadlines; advises team on issues related to area of expertise; feeds back information acquired from external sources to the team
- Ensures personal compliance with the established best practices to maintain a safe working environment for all
- The right candidate will have a PhD in computer science or computational biology with interdisciplinary exposure to a relevant life science (immunology, microbiology, genomics, or biochemistry).
- Candidates with a PhD in a relevant life science discipline and extensive experience in computational methodologies will also be considered.
- The candidate must have expert knowledge of core bioinformatics tools and databases. An understanding of machine learning and statistical techniques is also required.
- The candidate will have excellent skills in data integration.
- Experience in relational database technology is a must and knowledge of object and object-relational database management systems will be an asset.
- The ideal candidate will be experienced with W3C standards relating to semantic web technologies, including RDF, RDF-S, SPARQL, ontology editors and inference engines.
- The candidate will have excellent communication skills and the ability to work in, and lead, teams.
