BACKGROUND
NYU Medical Center operates a core DNA sequencing lab with Illumina and 454 sequencers. The Sequencing Bioinformatics group provides data management with both basic and advanced bioinformatics data analysis. (The search for this position has been re-opened as of July 10, 2010).RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage all aspects of bioinformatics associated with running a 454 Genome Sequencer. Meet with scientists to determine experimental design, set up runs, process data, assembly, alignment, metagenomic analysis, submit data to GenBank, etc.REQUIREMENTS
- Masters degree or new Ph.D. in Computer Science or Bioinformatics (or related field)
- High level of expertise in Unix, Perl, and at least one compiled programming language (Java, C, C++)
- Good communication skills and ability to work in a flexible and highly productive team
- Must have current work authorization in the United States. NYU will NOT accept applicants who do not have current residency and work permit in the US.
PREFERENCES
- Familiarity with Illumina and 454 data formats and software
- Familiarity with open source bioinformatics tools for sequence alignment, databases etc.
