    BACKGROUND

    The Hospital of the University of Munich, Germany, is one of the largest and most capable university hospitals in Germany and Europe. 45 specialized hospitals, departments and institutions harbouring excellent research and education provide patient care at the highest medical level with approximately 10,000 employees.

    The Institute for Stroke and Dementia Research (ISD) is a newly founded institution financed from foundation funds. The activity ranges from basic research to clinical trials (http://www.isd-muc.de). After completion of the construction phase, the Institute for Stroke and Dementia research will employ, around 100 staff members, graduate students, scholars and foreign scholars.

    The scientific focus is continuously developed by research groups and scientific advisors of the ISD.

    The ISD strives to appoint the best researchers and clinicians in the field.
    Currently, there is a focus on the following project areas:
    • Small vessel disease | Microvessels | Vascular cognitive impairment | Post-stroke dementia
    • Genetics | Imaging | Surrogate markers for clinical trials | Investigator-initiated trials
    • Animal models | Vascular mechanism

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The scientist will reinforce our existing Bioinformatics team. The employee will apply bioinformatics biostatistics techniques to genome-wide data of neurological diseases and image-data acquired from patients. This implies the handling and processing of large datasets, the implementation and analysis of Genome Wide Association Scans (GWAS) in close collaboration with wet-lab scientists and clinicians, sequence analysis and the statistical analysis of the data produced using sophisticated statistical models. Contribution to projects like in machine learning and image analysis (MRT, FMRI) is desired. As this research group is both a wet-lab and a dry-lab, bioinformatics challenges may also arise from wet-lab data.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Degree in Bioinformatics Statistics (Master’s or Ph.D.)
    • Basic knowledge of Molecular Biology
    • IT-Proficiency: C(++), R and at least one scripting language (preferably Python or Perl)
    • Working knowledge: relational databases, biological databases
    • General abilities: multi-task, work independently, collaborative skills adapt to changing priorities, work in face paced environment, analytical skills, verbal communications skills, written communication skills, presentation skills

    COMPENSATION

    We offer a varied job in a dynamic team within a scientific environment and most modern equipment. Salary is according to TV-L. The position is limited for two years, extension is desired. Disabled persons will be preferentially considered in case of equal qualification. Presentation costs can unfortunately not be refunded.
