    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Columbia University Medical Center. The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics (DBMB) seeks to hire successful candidates for the position of Staff Associate to join the Maniatis Lab. The primary duty will be to serve as a Computational Biologist to development and maintenance of database and web interface for exploration and analysis of ALS-related gene expression data. Analysis of deep sequencing data.

    As part of a federally funded collaborative grant, gene expression data will be generated throughout the country from cells derived from ALS patients. Our lab is responsible for coordinating the sharing and dissemination of these data to the broader ALS research community as well as for their preliminary analysis. Most of the data will be high-throughput RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq). We perform quality control, align these sequences to the human genome, and calculate gene and isoform levels. Most of the pipeline is written in Perl, dHTML, MySQL and R. Although we will also perform further analyses on these data, the primary goal is to make all data and analyses easily accessible to other ALS researchers via a web interface. The candidate will become progressively responsible for the development, maintenance and administration of the pipeline and database.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Minimum Degree Required:
    • Bachelor's or equivalent
    Minimum Qualifications:
    • 4 years of experience, or the approval of the office of Faculty Affairs
    • A high level of proficiency in quantitative thinking (demonstrated for example by success in previous research projects or advanced mathematics, computer science or statistics coursework)
    • Previous experience in database management and Web development

    PREFERENCES

    • Some background in biology or bioinformatics is desirable but not required.
    • The successful candidate should be interested in learning more about molecular biology and neurodegenerative disease.
    TERMS: Minimum of 24 months
