    BACKGROUND

    The Zhao Bioinformatics Lab at The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, Inc. (http://www.noble.org) is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow under the recently awarded NSF grant (http://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward.do?AwardNumber=0960897) to investigate how genome scale transcriptional regulatory networks control gene expression. The project, entitled “Systems Bioinformatics Approaches to Modeling and Deciphering Plant Transcriptional Regulatory Networks” will address diversity and complexity of gene regulation in plant systems and regulatory networks among key regulatory elements, including transcription factors, microRNAs (miRNAs), trans-acting small interfering RNAs (ta-siRNAs), and emergent regulatory elements.
    With this award, The Zhao Bioinformatics Lab have three other immediate openings, including a Senior Research Associate/Research Scientist (#PB-S080-620: Computational biology/Bioinformatics), a Research Associate (#PB-S073-621: Bioinformatics/Scientific Programming), and an intern scholar (#PB-S270-618).

    In addition, a Research Associate/Post-doc position (#PB-S070-106) supported by base funding from the Noble Foundation is currently available.

    Duration of current funding: 3 years

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The successful candidate will join the laboratory of Dr. Patrick Xuechun Zhao to develop systems bioinformatics approaches to decipher plant transcriptional regulatory networks. The post-doc will focus on system and data integration, and algorithm development to infer large scale GRN from high throughput functional genomics data; specific responsibilities include: 1) to develop graphical models to model and simulate plant transcriptional regulatory networks; 2) to develop novel computational algorithms to infer large-scale gene regulatory networks (GRNs) from high-throughput functional genomics data in model plants and 3) to perform genome-scale data analysis to construct and curate Arabidopsis Gene Regulation Networks (AGRN) and Legume Gene Regulatory Networks (LGRN).

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Ph.D. degree in quantitative sciences, engineering or related life sciences field
    • Independent problem solving skills
    • Have good communication skills, strong team-work spirit, and self-learning abilities

    PREFERENCES

    • Ph.D. degree in Plant Biology, Genomics, Bioinformatics, Computer Science or highly-related field
    • Experience in developing large-scale data analysis systems
    • 2+ years of experience in Bioinformatics and Plant Genomics
    • Programming skills with Java, C/C++, Perl, XML, and SQL using MySQL Server; and efficiency in Linux/Unix operating systems
    • Knowledge about gene regulatory networks, graphical models such as the dynamic Bayesian networks
