    BACKGROUND

    The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.

    The Deciphering Developmental Disorders (DDD) project is a new initiative co-funded by the Wellcome Trust and the Department of Health to utilise the latest techniques in genomics to identify the genetic causes of developmental disorders.

    Developmental disorders are conditions that are the result of problems during the development of the body or the brain and are apparent in children from shortly after birth. Currently, in the majority of cases we do not understand why the disorder has happened. However, we know that a significant proportion of developmental disorders are due to genetic factors. This project will study families with at least one individual affected with a developmental disorder recruited within the 23 Regional Genetics Services of the UK National Health Service. We will use very high-resolution genomic techniques including DNA microarrays, genotyping and next generation DNA sequencing to identify mutations that might explain the developmental disorder and so provide diagnoses for families and increase our knowledge of gene function in health and disease.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    We are looking for a Programmer/Computer Biologist to work within a team of three other programmers producing and maintaining the software tools to facilitate data storage and analysis to enable robust determination of copy number variation, genotype and sequence variation in patients and parents recruited into the DDD study.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • The successful applicant is likely have a degree in Life Sciences or Computer Science.
    • Strong UNIX/LINUX/systems skills
    • Good experience of working with relational databases
    • Experience of programming in an object orientated language for more than one year, a working knowledge of PERL and R
    • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team is essential

    PREFERENCES

    • Experience of working with high-throughput biological analysis pipelines would be an advantage.

    TERMS

    There is funding available for this position until 30th June 2015.

    COMPENSATION

    Salary range 21,115 to 27,999 GBP dependent on experience.
