    BACKGROUND

    An NSF-funded post-doctoral position in evolutionary genomics is available in the Biology Department at Colorado State University. The position is focused on genome evolution in plethodontid salamanders, which have among the largest vertebrate genomes: 15 to ~75 Gb. Although such genomes are known to consist largely of repetitive DNA, the repeat elements, their mutational dynamics, and the ways in which these dynamics translate into large and variable genome sizes remain almost completely uncharacterized. The postdoc will use next-gen sequencing data to study the mutational processes underlying this extreme genomic expansion.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The postdoc will interact with collaborators at UC Denver (David Pollock, the Consortium for Comparative Genomics) and UT Arlington (Cédric Feschotte) to 1) identify and characterize novel repeat elements from several species of plethodontids, which diverged ~40-60 mya, and 2) analyze the tempo and mode of repeat element evolution, and the relationship with genomic expansion, in a phylogenetic context. These results will be combined with ongoing comparative methods-based analyses of plethodontid genome size evolution.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • A Ph.D. in evolutionary or comparative genomics, or in a closely-related field, is required by the position start-date.

    PREFERENCES

    • A strong computational background is desirable, as methods for identifying repetitive sequences from low-coverage shotgun 454 data are still in their infancy; there is a lot of room for computational and statistical advances to make these types of analyses possible.
    • Specific knowledge of vertebrate biology is not required, nor is a specific background in phylogenetics, although both are desirable.

    LOCALE

    The Department of Biology at Colorado State University is an interdisciplinary group. CSU is heavily oriented towards life sciences; five of the University’s eight Colleges are dedicated to life science research. In addition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United States Department of Agriculture, and the United States Geological Survey have active laboratories in Fort Collins.
