The DOE Joint Genome Institute in Walnut Creek, CA has an exciting Postdoc opportunity available. Will serve as a Computational Biologist Postdoc within the Metagenome and Microbial Genome programs and focus on the analysis of data generated by the Arabidopsis Rhizosphere Grand Challenge project, with a strong emphasis on 16S pyrotags, single cell genomics and metatranscriptomics. Responsibilities include obtaining sequence data from internal or external sources and implementing, configuring, and running software for processing and analysis of such data. Will store and organize results for presentation and viewing by internal and external project team members and the wider scientific community and help devise and perform tests to assess the quality of input and output data. Position reports to Metagenome Program lead.
Specific Job Duties:
- Work with JGI collaborators to obtain Grand Challenge data including 16S pyrotag sequences, single cell whole-genome-shotgun sequences, and metatranscriptome sequence.
- Implement, configure and run software for processing and analyzing collected sequence data, which will involve trimming, filtering, clustering, assembling and aligning to reference genomes or public databases.
- Devise and perform tests to assess the quality of input and output data and troubleshoot moderately complex systems and data analysis issues.
- Analyze and compare datasets to extract biological conclusions with both public and custom software.
- Store, organize and display results for presentation and viewing by JGI collaborators and the wider scientific community.
- Interact with internal and external collaborators to ensure efficient communication and completion of analysis projects.
- Document group analysis procedures and methods for reference.
REQUIREMENTS
- Ph.D. in computer science or life sciences with some relevant research experience in both areas
- Strong background in bioinformatics, molecular biology and genomics
- Experience with: development of computational methods and algorithms, databases of genomic information, methods of analysis of biological sequence data especially next-generation sequence data
- Proficient in computer programming and experience using PC, Mac and/or UNIX operating systems
- Strong organizational and record keeping skills to record experimental results and analyze data
- Effective oral and written communication skills to present findings at group meetings and conferences and publish results
- Ability to interact with a variety of technical and scientific personnel including Research Associates, Scientists and Software Engineers
PREFERENCES
- Experience with genome assembly and annotation
- Experience in metagenomics
TERMS
