    Opportunity: Viral Genome Curator @ Computercraft--Bethesda, MD (US)

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Computercraft seeks a Viral Genome Curator to maintain a reference set of viral genomes within the RefSeq database and use these to develop web based viral genome resources. The successful candidate will work onsite at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. Our scientists work with genomics experts at the NIH's National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) in the National Library of Medicine (NLM) to create and enhance the suite of databases and tools available to researchers worldwide.
    • Analyze and review available viral genome sequences using specialized databases, bioinformatics software, and literature.
    • Generate publicly released reference genomes containing the most complete and accurate sequence, annotation, and meta data possible.
    • Perform computational biology analysis of viral genomes and proteins.
    • Curate the NCBI protein clusters database and develop protein function annotation.
    • Correspond and collaborate with external experts to ensure that genome records contain accurate information and conduct database quality control by manual and electronic methods.
    • Work with groups of computer scientists to identify problems and recommend enhancements to analytical, processing, and statistical software.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • A Ph.D. in molecular biology or virology
    • Experience in protein/ RNA/ DNA sequence analysis and bioinformatics software
    • Hands-on laboratory experience and computer expertise
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
