    The DOE Joint Genome Institute in Walnut Creek, CA, has an exciting Computational Biologist (Postdoctoral Researcher) opportunity available.

    The selected candidate will be involved in a project to study potential cellulosic biofuel feedstock species for semi-arid climates, with an initial focus on Agave species. The goal of this project is to investigate genetic and genomic adaptations of plants to semi-arid climates, with a particular focus on molecular adaptations that enable drought resistance and efficient biomass production on land that is not otherwise suitable for food production. This project will involve massive-scale data generation on the latest generation of sequencing equipment, as well as development and application of cutting-edge computational strategies for de novo transcriptome assembly and analysis from next-generation sequencing data.

    Specific Job Duties:
    • Coordinate sample acquisition with collaborators and support sample preparation for transcriptome sequencing studies.
    • In close collaboration with bioinformatics staff, apply tools for de novo transcriptome assembly and develop and apply new computational strategies for quantitative and qualitative analysis of RNA-seq data.
    • Analyze and summarize data and present findings at internal lab meetings and scientific conferences.
    • Develop and coordinate downstream experimental studies derived from this work with outside collaborators.
    • Publish in peer-reviewed journals and contribute to scientific research papers and reports.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Ph.D. in biology, botany, genetics, genomics or a relevant related field
    • Demonstrated experience in computational analysis of sequence data
    • Experience with molecular biology techniques, such as DNA/RNA extraction and analysis methods
    • Basic understanding of plant biology
    • Strong interest in genomic questions and the use of computational strategies to derive biological insights from genomic datasets
    • Demonstrated scientific productivity through publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals
    • Effective oral and written communication skills to present findings at group meetings and conferences and publish results

    TERMS

    This is a two-year term appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent upon continued funding and satisfactory performance. Work will be performed at the DOE Joint Genome Institute in Walnut Creek, CA.
