    BACKGROUND

    SRA conducts, coordinates, and analyzes clinical and experimental studies to inform health research. This practice area addresses preventative, diagnostic, and therapeutic issues in a public health context, including research in cancer, asthma, allergies, diabetes, infectious diseases, genomics, nutrition, reproductive health, and environmental health.

    Project Overview SRA is assisting the NCI/NHGRI Cancer Genome Atlas program to collect, sequence, and characterize diseased tissues by supporting data management. We are responsible for data collection, transformation, dissemination, and quality control of this biological data. We also establish and implement standard operating procedures for the transmission, processing, and storage of data by leveraging existing NIH resources for the analysis and storage of information, and facilitate reporting to management on progress and status of this large project.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Provide Data Quality Analysis for The Cancer Genome Atlas Data Coordinating Center. We anticipate that the DCC shall play a significant role in establishing quality checks, enforcing quality controls, and integrating information systems between the QMS, the DCC, and the BCRs. Staff shall fully support the data quality assurance and QMS activities from the perspective of the DCC. The DCC must also complete a thorough data quality review and sanity check.
    • Accounting for all data (identifying gaps and providing an accounting for missing information)
    • Review of all XML meta-data files and data description files for completeness and sanity of data values. The sanity review is primarily to ensure the type of values represented within the files is valid.
    • Cursory review of a small number of XML meta-data files demonstrated non-sensical data passing data validation
    • In later stages of the project, may also assist in software testing and validation, especially where relevant to data ETL and manipulations.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Years of experience (min): 3-5
    • Degree: Bachelors. Degree may be waived in lieu of relevant years of work experience.
    • Skills: Experience with data QA/QC for molecular biology data, either in relational databases of flat files, formatted in XML
    • Requires basic knowledge of modern biological concepts in molecular biology and genetics or in formal QA/QC procedures and standards.
    • Superb attention to detail and excellent communication skills a must
    • Knowledge of relational databases and basic SQL as well as basics of XML

    PREFERENCES

    • Degree: Masters
    • Degree Subject: Bioinformatics, molecular biology, or CS
    • Skills: Experience with software testing and validation for Java, HTML5, DHTML, Cascading Style Sheets, web-based UIs, and Spring Framework 2.x.
    • Advanced knowledge of SQL and XML
    • Experience with JUnit, unit testing concepts and methodologies
