BACKGROUND
SRA conducts, coordinates, and analyzes clinical and experimental studies to inform health research. This practice area addresses preventative, diagnostic, and therapeutic issues in a public health context, including research in cancer, asthma, allergies, diabetes, infectious diseases, genomics, nutrition, reproductive health, and environmental health.
Project Overview SRA is assisting the NCI/NHGRI Cancer Genome Atlas program to collect, sequence, and characterize diseased tissues by supporting data management. We are responsible for data collection, transformation, dissemination, and quality control of this biological data. We also establish and implement standard operating procedures for the transmission, processing, and storage of data by leveraging existing NIH resources for the analysis and storage of information, and facilitate reporting to management on progress and status of this large project.RESPONSIBILITIES
This position will work directly with TCGA Program staff. Will act as bioinformatics consultant to Program Director, performing data, mathematical, and statistical analysis in a UNIX cluster environment using open source and other bioinformatics and statistical tools. Liaison role to remainder of data coordinating team on this project. Will assist in the analysis of scientific data from high-throughput biological characterization of diseased tissue.
Travel: 0 - 10%REQUIREMENTS
- Years of experience (min): 3-5
- Degree: Masters. Degree may be waived in lieu of relevant years of work experience.
- Skills: Ph.D., or M.S. with 3-5 years experience, in bioinformatics and/or biostatistics of high throughput genomics data
- Next Generation Sequencing data analysis experience highly desired.
- Experience with high throughput characterization technologies (i.e. gene expression, DNA copy number variation, chromosome rearrangements, DNA methylation, and RNA interference) and the management of data resulting from these platforms
- Experience with working in a cross-functional, fast paced team environment
- Familiarity with existing data standards from NIH
- Familiarity with MAGE-TAB and MAGE-ML data formats
- Experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle)in a Linux/UNIX environment
- Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Perl or Python), XML, and basic concepts of object oriented development (e.g., Java)
- Experience with Biostatistics using R, MATLAB, etc.
- Topnotch communication skills, both oral and written
PREFERENCES
- Degree: PhD
- Degree Subject: Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, CS with strong biology background
- Skills: Trained in both bioinformatics and biostatistics
- Biologist with significant experience in and desire to do analysis, and ability to understand significance of the biological data
- Experience with clustering algorithms and software
- Experience with scientific visualization tools (e.g. Spotfire)
