The DOE Joint Genome Institute in Walnut Creek, CA has an exciting Bioinformatics Software Developer opening available to support the Sequencing Quality Assurance / Quality Control Group. Will develop software systems and analyze data to support quality control of the JGI production sequencing platforms. Initial work will focus on the development of a software system using LAMP for analysis of short read sequence technology. Will also perform quality control research and development work to investigate improved methods for performing sequencing data analysis. Will work independently and contributing as a member of a dynamic, multidisciplinary team environment. Position reports to the QA/QC Group Lead.

Specific Job Duties:

• Identify client needs and requirements to develop, implement, test, integrate and deploy new and/or existing software applications and work with other developers to coordinate work.
• Develop a software system for the analysis of short read sequence technology.
• Create, manage, and query MySQL databases.
• Develop and utilize Perl classes, modules, and scripts for managing data and performing analyses; and Perl/CGI web pages for providing user access.
• Interface with end-users to gather feedback and requirements.
• Provide responsive customer support; provide users with the prompt resolution of data entry errors, software malfunctions, and other system needs.
• Solve diverse problems by applying analytical skills and creativity.
• Communicate regularly with customers and supervisory staff about plans, designs, and progress.
• Follow prescribed practices for software version control, testing, documentation, and release engineering.
• Perform all assignments in accordance with ES&H, Security, and business practice requirements and policies.

REQUIREMENTS:

• Typically requires a B.S. in Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science or a related field and at least five years of relevant software development experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Comprehensive knowledge of software applications and experience in a broad suite of software programs
• Experience with Perl, database design and performance tuning
• Experience with full life-cycle software development process, including requirements definition, analysis, design, implementation, and testing phases
• Demonstrated success designing and implementing systems and software in a scientific and/or technical environment; e.g., university, national laboratory, corporate R&D center or automated manufacturing facility
• Ability to effectively learn and apply new technology concepts to troubleshoot and solve problems and challenges of a diverse scope
• Effective interpersonal communication, public speaking, and presentation skills
• Effective time management, organization, and planning skills
• Demonstrated ability to effectively manage concurrent technical tasks with competing priorities, while working under short deadlines
• Proven ability to work with scientific and administrative customers to define needs and priorities
• Effective verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills necessary to work in a technical team environment, and with user communities and all levels of management
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively both in a diverse team environment and independently

TERMS:
This is a full-time two-year term appointment with the possibility of renewal and the possibility of conversion to career contingent upon satisfactory performance, continued work, and funding availability. The work schedule may include off-hours and/or weekends. Work will be performed at the DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI) located in Walnut Creek, CA.
