    BACKGROUND

    Are you a PhD biologist who has experience analyzing genomics data and is a computer power user? We're looking for you!

    Genome-scale experiments, such as gene expression microarrays or SNP genotyping, typically lead to the identification of large lists of genes. The interpretation of results and the formulation of consistent biological hypotheses from these large lists are challenging. Bioinformatics approaches can aid interpretation by relating the gene lists to knowledge about the biological system, such as known pathways. This analysis can be used to generate hypotheses that can be experimentally tested.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The applicant will work with multiple investigators in a large-scale cancer stem cell program to analyze cancer genomics data, including gene expression, copy number variation, and sequence data derived from animal cancer models and patient samples. The applicant will analyze these data using existing software tools (and scripting languages whenever required), in collaboration with a professional biostatistician and will help experimental biologists interpret the results.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • The applicant will have a PhD in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, molecular genetics, computational biology, bioinformatics or a related discipline.
    • Outstanding communication and teamwork skills are essential.
    • A basic knowledge of microarray data analysis is required (e.g. normalization, clustering, differential gene expression statistics).

    PREFERENCES

    • Previous experience in experimental biology research and/or genomics data analysis (e.g. Cytoscape network visualization) will be favored in applicant selection.
    • Programming skills in other languages such as R, Matlab, Perl, Python or Java are a plus.

    LOCALE

    The work will be conducted at the University Health Network and the University of Toronto, a major international centre of genomics, proteomics and systems biology research, in the heart of Toronto. There will be ample opportunity for professional development. The applicant will be co-supervised by principal investigators involved in experimental cancer research and computational biology/bioinformatics.
