    BACKGROUND

    The laboratory of Kevin J. Verstrepen at the University of Leuven and VIB Leuven, Belgium is seeking to hire a postdoctoral bioinformatics expert.

    The laboratory consists of a multidisciplinary team that combines experiment and theory to investigate genome dynamics in model organisms (mostly S. cerevisiae) as well as in humans. We are focusing on integrating multiple data sources (next-gen sequencing, transcriptomics, directed evolution...) to investigate complex genetics of human disease as well as industrial properties of microbes.

    The laboratory has a strong publication output, including multiple articles in Science, Cell, Nature, PNAS, Current Biology, Genome Research... We aim for state-of-the-art, high-quality and high-impact science.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The successful applicant will be working on two related research topics, in close collaboration with our wet-lab team. Hence, you will be analyzing novel data that was generated in-house, and you can help guide the experiments that generate the data.

    Topic 1 involves investigating the variability and biological consequences of unstable tandem repeats located in human genes. We will sequence about 15,000 tandem repeats located within coding and regulatory regions of the human genome in several patients and several tissues. The successful applicant will help map the repeats, analyze and assemble the next-gen sequencing data, and find correlations with diseases or other phenotypes.

    Topic 2 involves investigating the complex genetics underlying ethanol tolerance in industrial yeasts used for bioethanol production. Here, the wet-lab team is already generating novel yeasts with improved ethanol tolerance. Your job will be to analyze and integrate the whole-genome sequencing data, transcriptomics data and phenotypic data to unravel the (combinations of) mutations that yield ethanol resistance, and to understand how an organism can become resistant to ethanol. Apart from the obvious industrial application in the bio-ethanol industry, this project will also serve as a pioneering study to investigate complex genetics in humans.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • PhD or equivalent in bioinformatics. experience with next-gen sequencing, transcriptomics, data visualization, online databases and applets, and a good working knowledge of statistics are a plus.
    • Working knowledge of English (no need to know Dutch - given the number of international students, English is the standard language in our lab and also across town)

    The medieval university town of Leuven, about 10 km from Brussels, the capital of Belgium and located right in the heart of Europe. Leuven is a small, active, lively and very safe town with more than 50,000 students, many of which are international scholars. It's close location to Brussels make it a perfect spot to travel around. The University of Leuven is one of the oldest and highly-ranked European Universities (30,000 students, 20% foreign students, exceptional research output).
