RESPONSIBILITIES

• Work under the guidance of lead developer to support users of the Institute's infrastructure resources and develop novel software that runs on these resources
• Work on any software-related issues on the High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster, UCSC genome mirror servers, HPC web server and LIMS system in support of NextGen high throughput sequencing
• Collaborate with individual scientists to develop custom/unique bioinformatics applications using scripting languages and web-enable them for the use of all researchers
• Collaborate with the hardware team to troubleshoot software installation problems and provide hardware requirements for any new infrastructure initiatives
• Participate in the basic requirements collection, design review, coding, testing, troubleshooting and support for custom developed software solutions
• Stay abreast on current and emerging software development technologies and tools

REQUIREMENTS

• Solid experience with Unix/Linux systems and the use of Torque or Sun Grid Engine to distribute and manage large computing jobs on a High Performance Cluster environment
• Strong ability to create workflows in Perl, Python or other scripting languages for the automation of bioinformatics processes
• Documented expertise in handling large volume of data in relational databases
• Ability to build web applications based on the provided design documents
• Good communication skills, both written and verbal
• Ability to work independently, be detail-oriented, and have excellent analytical skills
• Demonstrate initiative in experimenting with new technologies.

PREFERENCES

• Previous work experience within research environment is preferred.
• Experience using BioPerl or BioPython packages, R or Matlab programming will be beneficial.
• Programming experience in Java is helpful.
