    RESPONSIBILITIES

    We are searching for a highly motivated scientist with expertise in high-throughput or "next-generation" sequencing analysis to support the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

    The candidate will operate in a multi-disciplinary group of scientists who provide support, training, and consultation services to the NIAID research community in the areas of bioinformatics and computational biosciences. The successful candidate for this position will be energetic, flexible, personable, and highly capable. Candidates MUST have excellent written and verbal communication skills to interact with the research community and find the right solution for their diverse high-throughput sequencing needs. We are looking for individuals who can perform under time constraints and have great troubleshooting skills. Candidates must also be comfortable conducting training sessions in either a one-on-one or classroom environment.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Expertise open source bioinformatics tools for whole genome sequencing analysis, variant detection (SNPs and indels), ChIP-Seq, RNA-Seq, etc.
    • Proficiency in the use of UNIX/Linux and its command-line environment, including scripting i.e. at least one of Perl, Python, Ruby, R, PHP, shell, etc.
    • Familiarity with common methods of statistical analysis and a broad spectrum of bioinformatics tools, including genome browsers, NCBI tools, and "downstream" analysis using gene ontology, pathways, and networks
    • Ability to communicate computational biology principles and concepts to non-specialists in a clear and precise manner and advise on relevant software and tools
    • Expert use of personal computers running the Macintosh OS X and/or Microsoft Windows operating systems
    • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, including the ability to learn new software quickly
    • Strong interpersonal, presentation, written, and oral communication skills with a dedication to customer satisfaction
    • Attention to detail, time management skills, and ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team with a high level of personal and professional drive and initiative

    This opportunity is a permanent, full-time position with Lockheed Martin MSD.
