The DOE Joint Genome Institute in Walnut Creek, CA has an exciting Software Developer position available to support the Shared Components Team. Under general supervision, will work with customers and other software developers to support and extend the production systems that are shared between various JGI Informatics groups. This includes common infrastructure such as databases, web application servers, and a data warehouse. Assignments will span the full software development lifecycle, including participation in requirements gathering, implementation, testing, and deployment existing systems. Position reports to the Production Informatics group lead.
Specific Job Duties:- Participate in the design, implementation, testing, and deployment of extensions of the existing shared production systems, including: Oracle instances, the production data warehouse, and web application servers.
- Provide support of the existing shared production systems, including the resolution of custom user and data retrieval requests.
- Develop software using a mix of the following: Oracle, MySQL, Perl, Perl/CGI, Javascript, Ruby (with Rails), Java, Groovy, CVS, SVN.
- Apply analytical skills and creativity to solve diverse and challenging problems.
- Communicate regularly with customers and supervisory staff about plans, designs and progress.
- Follow prescribed practices for software version control, testing, and release engineering.
- Attend workshops and conferences in appropriate areas.
- Present technical and analytical status in weekly meetings and contribute to publications.
- B.S. in Computer Science or a related scientific field (or equivalent experience) and a minimum of five years related experience.
- Demonstrated success designing and implementing systems and software in a scientific or technical environment, e.g., University, National Laboratory, corporate R&D center or automated manufacturing facility.
- Full life-cycle software development experience with the ability to work with scientific and administrative customers to define needs and priorities.
- Demonstrated experience with a scripting language (Ruby, Perl, Python, etc).
- Demonstrated experience with creating/querying MySQL/Oracle/PostgreSQL databases.
- Demonstrated experience installing, configuring and maintaining web application servers e.g. Apache, JBoss, etc.
- Demonstrated experience developing web applications using at least one of the following: Ruby on Rails, PHP/Perl/Java with any framework.
- Experience working with version control systems e.g. SVN, CVS, Git.
- Ability to apply analytical skills and creativity to solve diverse and challenging problems.
- Effective time management, organization, and planning skills with the ability to allocate resources and assign work to meet goals and deadlines.
- Talent for working well under short deadlines and handling multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Demonstrated experience working in a customer service oriented development environment.
- Ability to interact effectively with users with minimal computer expertise, and to work effectively with biologists, and other team members.
TERMS
This is a 1 year term appointment with the possibility of renewal and with the possibility of conversion to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. Work will be performed at the DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI) in Walnut Creek, CA. Job may require occasional travel, weekend, and after-hours work.
