    BACKGROUND

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.

The Parasite Genomics group, within Pathogen Genomics, is sequencing and analysing the genomes of parasitic worms. We are seeking to recruit a Postdoctoral Fellow to complete the analysis of the genome of Globodera pallida, an economically important parasite of the UK potato harvest, and contribute to comparative genomics analyses of this organism with that of other plant parasitic nematodes.

    Key Responsibilities:
    • Align high coverage transcript sequences to Globodera genome assembly to identify expressed regions
    • Use similarity searches to ascribe functions to putative genes
    • Perform comparative analysis of Globodera with related available genome sequences
    • Communicate effectively with external collaborators

    REQUIREMENTS

    • The ideal candidate will have experience in bioinformatics and comparative genomics, and an interest in parasite biology, but any candidates with strong bioinformatics backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
    • You will either have a PhD or MSc (with equivalent experience) in bioinformatics, comparative genomics or a related discipline, or have a similarly strong biology background and some experience in bioinformatics, including simple scripting in Perl, Python, or some equivalent language.

    TERMS

The position, supported by a BBSRC research grant is offered until 29th February 2012. For further information please contact Dr James Cotton (jc17[at]sanger.ac.uk)

    COMPENSATION

Salary range £28000 to £34433 dependent on experience.

Postdoctoral Fellows are typically in their first or second postdoctoral position as part of a period of early career research training. Successful applicant(s) who have submitted their PhD thesis and are awaiting their PhD award to be confirmed will be placed on a transitional pay point, currently £25,845.

On confirmation applicants will be moved on to the pay scale above.

The Institute has excellent purpose built facilities on the Genome Campus, Hinxton on the outskirts of Cambridge. We offer a comprehensive range of benefits including a final salary pension scheme and excellent on-site facilities. Further details can be found on our website https://jobs.sanger.ac.uk.
