    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Bioinformatics Software Engineer will work with neuroscientists and molecular biologists to produce software that furthers the research goals of the Janelia Farm Research Campus. The candidate will have experience and be familiar with algorithms, methods, and applications for bioinformatics with a preference given to focus on LIMS, process control, or similar discipline. Proficiency with years of experience in Perl, PHP, Java, or Python is essential and development experience in all four is preferred, also experience with statistical analysis packages R, S-Plus, or MATLAB.

    Responsible for maintaining standards of all phases of the Software Development Lifecycle, from standards for capture and documentation of requirements to acceptable testing practices. Work closely with neuroscientists and develop common software tools and methodologies that can be used across various research groups; which includes programming in Perl, PHP, Java, and/or Python. The successful candidate will work closely with other groups in the Scientific Computing Department to design, architect, and maintain software/hardware architectures and frameworks that are robust, cost-effective and reliable and able to be flexible about dynamically shuffling priorities to accommodate a very rapidly changing research environment

    REQUIREMENTS

    • The ideal candidate should have at a minimum a BS in an engineering or scientific discipline preferably in Biological Sciences and a minimum of 5 years of experience in bioinformatics software development.
    • Also the candidate needs to be skilled in developing for the web with knowledge of DHMTL and Ajax technologies.
    • Strong written and oral communication skills
    • Demonstrated ability to work as a team member and team resource and willingness to lend a hand with any project and provide an unparalleled level of customer service

    PREFERENCES

    • Experience in working closely with scientists in a pure research environment is a plus.
