    BACKGROUND

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.

As part of the Sanger Pathogen Genetics Programme, we are building a software platform to process, analyse and explore huge amounts of genomic data that could be the key to eradicate malaria, a potentially fatal disease which affects almost half a billion people every year. We are combining large-scale epidemiological studies with high-throughput analysis of genome variation to systematically search the malaria parasite, their mosquito vector and the human host genomes for novel alleles that affect disease progression. These insights will be critical for the control of antimalarial drug resistance, the development of new drugs, and ideally, an effective vaccine against this disease.

The massive size of our datasets, which are generated both within Sanger and in collaboration with our partners at Oxford University and other sites, generate issues of scalability and performance on all levels, from data storage to front end. It is our aim to provide universal access of our data to the general scientific community; therefore our platform is completely oriented to the web and should be flexible enough to be used with several different organism genomes. We offer to our users, amongst other things, real-time analysis, visualisation and data management tools.
