    Our Client, The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a part of the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the primary Federal agency for conducting and supporting medical research. Helping to lead the way towards important medical discoveries that improve people's health and save lives, NIH scientists investigate ways to prevent disease as well as the causes, treatments, and even cures for common and rare diseases. Composed of 27 Institutes and Centers, the NIH provides leadership and financial support to researchers in every state and throughout the world.

    TAJ is supporting NIH fill their positions for over 10 years and has close to 90 full time employees onsite.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Job Duties: The Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications at the National Library of Medicine (NLM) requires the services of a software developer who will be responsible for supporting the R&D of medical image processing systems and developing practical applications based on the R&D outcomes for use in the field. In addition to mandatory requirements below, the ideal candidate should meet some of the desirable qualifications. The position reports to the Chief, Communications Engineering Branch (CEB).

    REQUIREMENTS

    Required Skills and Experience:
    • M.S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related technical discipline with three (3) years of relevant experience, or B.S. with five (5) years of relevant experience
    • Demonstrated expertise in developing applications using Java
    • Demonstrated experience in adapting research software for an external (practical) environment
    • Experience and knowledge of hardware and software in an R&D environment
    • Experience with various (open source) image processing software development toolkits and medical image formats
    • Experience with developing in Windows, Linux (various flavors) operating systems
    Required Personal Qualities:
    • Excellent oral, and written communication skills, and ability to document projects and provide status reports
    • Excellent team and interpersonal skills. Ability to both take direction and work in a self-directed environment, effectively interact with all levels of staff and external contacts
    • Excellent organization and time management skills, and flexibility to handle a variety of tasks, and shift priorities as needed

    PREFERENCES

    Desirable Skills and Experience:
    • Demonstrated experience with developing software for DICOM images
    • Familiarity with medical image processing, image analysis, and machine learning, image compression, and data communications technologies
    • Strong background in mathematics
    • Familiarity with MATLAB, and proficiency in two or more of the following languages and software: C/C++, Perl, XML, MySQL, Apache HTTP, and Tomcat
    • Exposure to developing on Mac OS X is a plus.
    • A publication record in the domain
    • Knowledge of biomedical terminology
    • Exposure to developing applications for handheld/mobile platforms is a plus
