    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Huttenhower lab in the Department of Biostatistics at the Harvard School of Public Health is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. This computational researcher will join a growing laboratory to focus on machine learning for microbial communities and other multicellular systems. Specifically, applicants are sought for work on two recently funded projects involving A) development of scalable hierarchical methodology for machine learning in very large, dense feature spaces, and B) applications of this methodology to predict protein function and interactions in microbial communities.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Expertise is required in scalable machine learning systems and their practical implementation, and the Fellow must be committed to close integration of computational methodology with biological applications and to interaction with experimental collaborators.
    • The project will require the eventual release of open-source software implementing developed methodology, and the computational resources of the Harvard School of Public Health and of the Broad Institute will be available as needed to support development and biological data processing.
    • Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Biology, or a related field
    • Familiarity with machine learning theory and applications
    • Proficient in C/C++ and one or more appropriate scripting languages
    • Familiarity with bioinformatic methodology and genomic data---particularly high-throughput sequencing and/or metagenomics---as indicated by publication record
    • Ability to communicate scientific material and collaborate well

    PREFERENCES

    • Familiarity with molecular biology and/or microbiology is desirable but not necessary.

    LOCALE

    The Huttenhower group is located within the Department of Biostatistics at the Harvard School of Public Health and works closely with the Broad Institute, the HSPH Bioinformatics Core, and the Biology and Public Health program, resulting in a rich environment for quantitative, computational, and laboratory collaborations.
