RESPONSIBILITIES
The HBC provides a center for bioinformatic research, services and training at the School. Biomedical scientists across Harvard work closely with the Core to develop innovative approaches to interpretation, visualization and distribution of large data sets and discoveries in public health. We are looking for a Scientific System Administrator to help us plan and build a computational research environment in public health. You will be working with researchers across the School to understand their current and future needs in data storage, processing and dissemination, support scientific software deployment and maintenance and work closely with a team of IT and bioinformatics engineers to develop scalable infrastructure deployed either at HSPH or in a cloud-based environment. We expect having to scale our data manipulation and management systems to match the increasing volumes of biomedical data, providing a challenging and rewarding environment for the appropriate applicant. By keeping up with developments in large scale data storage, virtualization and cloud-based system deployment you will be able to provide guidance on future software and hardware deployment at HSPH, assist with the development of new systems and collaborate with your peers at other Harvard institutions to explore fund-raising opportunities.
About you:
You have a background in science, experience in handling large data sets in a high-performance computing environment, and a strong interest in exploring and developing state of the art technologies to manage an ever-increasing amount of data. You thrive on working in an interdisciplinary environment, excel at communicating with IT specialists, researchers and administrators and are able to present challenges and possible solutions in a clear and understandable way to a broad audience. Collaborating with other scientific systems administrators across campus to vet new technologies in the context of a constantly changing scientific environment does not intimidate you. Terms like cloud computing, Hadoop, virtualization and parallel file systems are familiar to you.
The details:
Beyond the project- and development-based work, you will work with HSPH IT to provide assistance in basic systems administration tasks in a UNIX-based environment, including deployment and maintenance of servers dedicated to research tasks and aiding in the support of a high performance compute cluster. Demonstrated work experience in scientific environments is a must. A working knowledge of UNIX and scripting languages is expected as is previous experience in systems administration.REQUIREMENTS
- 3+ years of experience with UNIX server administration (RedHat / Centos) servers
- Working experience in high performance computing
- Excellent communication skills, ability to document procedures and provide guidance to researchers
- Scientific background (ideally in a quantitative science)
