    RESPONSIBILITIES

    About the position:
    The HSPH Bioinformatics Core (HBC) provides a center for bioinformatic research, services and training at the School. Biomedical scientists across Harvard work closely with the Core to develop innovative approaches to interpretation, visualization and distribution of health discoveries using omic information. We are looking for bioinformaticians and computational biologists to work with data from a wide variety of experimental techniques. HBC researchers includes scientists from different disciplines who work with the biomedical research community within the Harvard, MIT and Broad community, providing you with a unique opportunity to participate in world-class research that aims to make an impact on human health.

    About you:
    You have a background in biomedical or quantitative science and a strong interest in working with researchers in medicine and public health. You have a sound knowledge of biology and are curious to learn more. You thrive on scientific challenges, enjoy collaborating with an interdisciplinary team and excel at communicating with programmers and wet-lab scientists alike. Learning and applying new methods is natural for you, and you are motivated to continuously expand your skills in biology and methods. You have a good handle on your data management skills. Working on different projects and deadlines --- frequently in collaboration with other Cores --- doesn't intimidate you.

    The details:
    You will support researchers at HSPH and the Harvard community with their data management, quality control, analysis of data and presentation of results. HBC projects are usually a mix of short-term support tasks and long-term collaborations. You will need experience in at least one major bioinformatics domain such as microarray analysis (expression, methylation), sequencing (assembly, alignment, variant calling), functional analysis (enrichment studies, GSEA, networks) or data management and visualization. You will be expected to coordinate selected research or support projects and provide training in methods developed by the HBC team. You will work with HBC management to co-develop grants and other funding opportunities.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • PhD in a biomedical or quantitative science, or equivalent working experience
    • Proficiency with computational biology software, databases and methods
    • Scripting abilities (Perl, Python)
    • Expertise in at least one listed bioinformatics domain
    • Working knowledge of biology, genetics and cell biology
    • Proven ability to interpret and analyze large data sets and present results synthetically
    • Excellent written English and a familiarity with presenting biological results
    • Strong interpersonal skills
    • Computational experience

    PREFERENCES

    • Experience with R/BioC, GenePattern, Galaxy or similar environments
    • Competency in statistics
