    BACKGROUND

    SAIC-Frederick, Inc., is a wholly owned subsidiary of Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC). As prime contractor for the National Cancer Institute's research and development center in Frederick, MD, this national laboratory is dedicated to rapidly translating basic research into new technologies for diagnosing, treating, and preventing cancer and AIDS. SAIC-Frederick maintains a full suite of advanced technologies in areas such as nanotechnology, genomics and imaging; operates the federal government's only drug and vaccine manufacturing facilities; operates the high-performance Advanced Biomedical Computing Center; and supports more than 300 clinical trials for patients in the US and around the world.

    The Clinical Monitoring Research Program (CMRP) provides support to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases' (NIAID) Biostatistics Research Branch (BRB) within the Division of Clinical Research (DCR). The Biostatistician I provides support for the development and analysis of novel high dimensional immune assay data collected through various Phase I drug therapy/vaccine studies conducted within the clinical laboratories. This position supports that effort by performing programming and statistical analysis on a broad range of clinical and laboratory studies and creating databases to produce analysis data sets for assigned projects.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Biostatistician I maintains expertise in state-of-the-art data manipulation and statistical analyses. Performs statistical analyses on data related to research, experimentation, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and cure of human disease. Consults with investigators on design and analysis of clinical and observational studies using knowledge of statistical methods. Identifies appropriate methods to be used for processing and analyzing data that varies from project to project. Identifies programming requirements and assists the investigators/information technology in the development of specialized programs to resolve problems related to statistics analysis. Performs database management support by merging data from single or multiple sources to produce analysis data sets for assigned projects. Provides programming support including writing code for specialized programs, searching the Internet for information needed for the project, producing graphics and tables and other related tasks. Interacts with clinical and laboratory investigators in processing data and conducting statistical analyses. Assures the system and program documentation for assigned projects is complete and accurate. This position is located in Bethesda, Maryland.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Possession of a Bachelors degree from an accredited college/university with laboratory courses in a related discipline, or four (4) years related experience in lieu of degree. Foreign educated candidates who have completed part or all of their education outside of the United States must have their foreign education evaluated by an SAIC-approved accrediting organization to assure that it has met the equivalency of the qualifications of degree work in the United States.
    • No experience required beyond a Bachelors degree
    • Must have working knowledge in statistical methodology, software languages and computer systems
    • Ability to work on problems of moderate scope in which analysis of situation or data requires a review of identifiable factors
    • Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results
    • Ability to develop and implement problem solving techniques
    • Strong communication skills with the ability to interact with people from diverse areas and disciplines
    • Knowledge of scientific terminology used in the biopharmaceutical/clinical environment
    • Incumbent must have a detailed understanding of automatic data processing, various department specific applications, and the Statistical Analysis System (SAS) or R
    • Working knowledge of general principles related to statistics and data management analysis
    • This position is subject to obtaining a Public Trust Clearance

    PREFERENCES

    • Experience working with high dimensional biomedical data (e.g., microarray, genomic, or immune assay data) preferred
