    BACKGROUND

    The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Ensembl group are looking to recruit an enthusiastic project manager whose main responsibilities will be to coordinate genome annotation activities on specific projects allocated by the Ensembl genebuild team project leader ensuring annotation is delivered to the world leading automatic genome annotation standard expected of Ensembl for the international biomedical and bioinformatics research communities. Deputising for the Ensembl Genebuild Project Leader in team management when necessary. Additionally, the post holder will be Supporting external use of the ensembl pipeline system through various means including designing and giving training workshops, email, writing documentation for the projects allocated by the Ensembl Genebuild Project Leader and coordinating short term ("geek for a week") visits by external scientists.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Excellent programming skills, including significant experience, and knowledge of more than one language
    • Experience with relational database systems
    • Several years experience as a user of unix
    • PhD or similar experience in biology, bioinformatics or related subject
    • Extensive practical experience in bioinformatics
    • Experience of batch queuing systems and large scale computing
    • Extensive experience of genomic analysis
    • Experience of modifying bioinformatics algorithms
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Attention to detail
    • The ability to deliver a quality product within fixed deadlines
    • Excellent problem solving skills
    • Flexibility and adaptability
    • Prioritisation
    • Delegation
    • Experience of working in a large team
    • Supervision/teaching experience

    COMPENSATION

    Salary from GBP 27316 dependent on experience
