BACKGROUND
The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.
The WTSI is a world leader in genome sequencing and bioinformatics. The Ensembl project (http://www.ensembl.org) is a collaboration between the WTSI and the EBI and provides to the scientific community annotation for approximately 50 genomes. We have one of the world's largest dedicated computer resources for genomic analysis. Highly accurate manual annotation is provided by the Vega website as part of this effort, and the data we produce is used by thousands of scientists worldwide to help in their research.RESPONSIBILITIES
We are seeking a highly motivated web developer with bioinformatics experience to prepare and produce data for the Vega project, along with developing intuitive web displays for the complex data within the project.
The position is a senior Perl web developer in the Ensembl web team working on the Vega website (http://vega.sanger.ac.uk). The scope of the role includes all aspects of website development and deployment, from initial database creation through to website design and management.
The role requires interactions with members of the Havana group at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute (WTSI), the WTSI web team, Ensembl groups based at the WTSI and the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), and the external Vega community.REQUIREMENTS
In order to fulfil this role you will:- Require a high level of competence in the Perl programming language;
- Have an ability to use productively the MySQL relational database;
- Have a scientific degree with evidence of a high level of experience of relevant web development skills and web technologies (including Apache webserver management, mod_perl, DHTML, AJAX);
- Have the communication skills required to explain complex information in simple terms to a diverse audience.
PREFERENCES
Ideally you will have:- Experience and understanding of genomic scale bioinformatics;
- A track record of being able to create innovative and intuitive interfaces that allow the extraction, reporting and display of data from databases into a web environment;
- Experience working in a Unix/Linux environment.
COMPENSATION
Salary from GBP 27,316 per annum dependent on experience
