    BACKGROUND

    Norwich University seeks a full time research technician to participate as a member of the Vermont Genetics Network (VGN) outreach team in the implementation of a state wide science education outreach program for undergraduates.

    The Vermont Genetics Network (VGN) is the Vermont IDeA Network for Biomedical Excellence (INBRE), located at the University of Vermont (UVM), the lead institution for the state. We build biomedical research capacity throughout the state by promoting faculty and student research at our Baccalaureate Partner Institutions (BPIs). Our BPI Institutions include: Castleton State College, Green Mountain College, Johnson State College, Lyndon State College, Middlebury College, Norwich University and Saint Michael's College. We achieve our goals with research awards and reaching out to BPIs and other colleges with hands-on opportunities for students to carry out realistic research protocols in their classes and use VGN's facilities; developing Microarray and Proteomics facilities that serve the entire network; providing Bioinformatics services. The support for the BPI faculty, college and high school students and also science education Outreach efforts help build student interest in biomedical careers and supports the biomedical workforce.

    The goal of the VGN Outreach Core is to expose undergraduates in the state of Vermont to scientific technology and resources using hands-on experiences. We provide all teaching materials, laboratory materials, and laboratory equipment for baccalaureate colleges within the state to run each experiment. These experiments will increase the skills of undergraduate science students within the state and we believe these additional skills help them in their future scientific career development.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The technician will help to prepare for, and participate in, wet bench experiments that are carried out at colleges in Vermont. This includes: ordering supplies and reagents, preparing materials, aliquoting reagents, and processing DNA, RNA and protein samples. In the summer, the technician will help to trouble shoot and modify the experiments. The technician may also assist in curriculum integration and the development of new experiments. Travel is necessary as these experiments are carried out at colleges throughout Vermont, and the individual must be able to commute between Norwich University and the University of Vermont regularly. This is a 12-month, full time position.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Applicant will have a bachelor degree in biology, genetics or a related field with at least 2 years of research experience.
    • Teaching experience is not required, but the applicant should have an interest in undergraduate education.
