    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Department of Physiology and Neurobiology at the University of Connecticut seeks a Computer Programmer/Analyst I (UCP VI) in the Schwartz laboratory (http://schwartz.pnb.uconn.edu). The successful candidate will be a motivated and experienced Web developer with knowledge in bioinformatics and will be expected to create and maintain interactive Web-based interfaces for a suite of bioinformatics algorithms, tools, and databases developed in the laboratory and used extensively by researchers worldwide (currently over 15,000 visits from researchers in 85 countries). Additionally, this individual will assist with the general computational programming needs of the lab and will interface with system administrators and various research personnel.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • BS degree in computer science or related field and at least one year of related experience OR equivalent combination of education and job-based experience
    • Proficiency in a variety of programming/scripting languages commonly used in bioinformatic applications and Web-based software development (e.g., Perl, Python, Java, C/C++, HTML, CSS, CGI, PHP, JavaScript, Ruby on Rails, Ajax, etc.)
    • Familiarity working with UNIX/Linux-based computer clusters as well as designing and implementing databases using MySQL
    • Analytical, quantitative, and Web-based programming skills evidenced by a portfolio of previous work
    • The ability to write and communicate clearly and effectively

    PREFERENCES

    • MS degree in computer science or related field
    • Previous experience (2-5 years) in innovative Web-based software development (including Web 2.0 technologies)
    • Proficiency using graphics software (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.)
    • Artistic/creative abilities exemplified by previously designed Web pages and/or specific training
    • A background in statistics/probability/data mining and experience using R and/or MATLAB
    • A basic working knowledge of molecular biology, protein biochemistry, proteomics, and/or bioinformatics
    • A strong, detail-oriented and self-directed work ethic and a record of substantial productivity
    • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
    • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team

    University of Connecticut - Storrs, CT

    COMPENSATION

    Salary will be commensurate with experience. The University provides excellent medical, dental and retirement packages. This is an end-date position subject to annual renewal. Funding for this position is available for 2 one-year terms and will be dependent on continued grant support thereafter.
