    BACKGROUND

    The Center for Infection and Immunity at Columbia University (http://cii.columbia.edu) is recruiting for the position of Web Developer / Database Administrator to join our team in supporting the bioinformatics needs of the center. The bioinformatics group provides a broad range of support, from biological database development to microarray and next-generation sequencing based analysis projects.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The individual will be responsible for developing and supporting existing software and applications that supports 65 investigators at Columbia and a global network of researchers who work on projects related to infectious disease surveillance and discovery in humans and wildlife. Principal partners include the World Health Organization, PanAmerican Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control, EcoHealth Alliance and Wildlife Conservation Society.

    Primary responsibility of this position will be to extract results from analytical tools developed in-house, integrate this with sample metadata / annotations, and make the information available to researchers, via the web portal, in various ways. Other shared responsibilities include administration of the Linux servers and maintenance of research databases containing diverse experimental data. Applicants must be fluent in PERL (or scripting languages), have a strong knowledge of MySQL and familiarity with the Ruby on Rails application framework (understanding of molecular biology concepts/terminology is a plus). The individual will perform other related duties as assigned.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • The candidate should have at least one year of experience successfully developing applications using a MVC web-based framework (e.g., Ruby on Rails, Catalyst, Java Struts).
    • The candidate must have a strong knowledge of the Linux operating system and MySQL.
    • Ability to work independently and take initiative

    • Ability to organize and manage multiple projects and assignments
    • Ability to stay abreast of technology
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Requires a bachelor's degree in a biological science, bioinformatics, or computer science and at least four years experience.
    • The candidate selected for this position is required to undergo a full background check prior to a final offer of employment being made.
    • Master's degree in bioinformatics/computer science is strongly preferred. Master's degree may substitute in part for experience.
