    BACKGROUND

    The Center for Infection and Immunity at Columbia University (http://cii.columbia.edu) is recruiting for the position of System Administrator/IT Manager to join our team in supporting the bioinformatics needs of the center. The bioinformatics group provides a broad range of support, from biological database development to microarray and next-generation sequencing based analysis projects.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The individual will be responsible for updating, expanding, and maintaining a high-performance compute cluster that supports 65 investigators at Columbia and a global network of researchers who work on projects related to infectious disease surveillance and discovery in humans and wildlife. Principal partners include the World Health Organization, PanAmerican Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control, EcoHealth Alliance and Wildlife Conservation Society. The individual will perform other related duties as assigned.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Requires a bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent in education and experience, plus four years of related experience.
    • The candidate selected for this position is required to undergo a full background check prior to a final offer of employment being made.
    • The candidate must have a detailed working knowledge of support standards and practices involving a wide range of network-based server and desktop hardware/software resources such as SAN/NAS network storage, automated installation/update, file system management, backup/recovery, IT security concepts, cluster computing, virtualization, network architecture and protocols, and shell scripting.
    • Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware/software upgrades, and resource optimization as required.
    • Experience with SGE and parallel environments
    • Experience with database development (SQL)
    • Expertise with multiple scripting/programming languages (Perl/Ruby/CGI)
    • Familiarity with existing bioinformatics tools, databases, and software would be a plus.
    • Ability to work independently and efficiently
    • Should be a strong team player. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
