BACKGROUND

This position is ideal for an experienced Bioinformatician or Postdoc. This position will start immediately and is available for one year with the possibility of renewal. Selected candidate will work with a friendly team of bioinformaticians and web developers working on the TreeGenes Forest Genetics database (http://dendrome.ucdavis.edu). They will be specifically responsible for interacting with a larger group of developers involved in the iPlant Cyberinfrastructure project (http://www.iplantcollaborative.org/about/cyberinfrastructure-overview)

RESPONSIBILITIES

Under general supervision of the bioinformatics group leader, develop and expand the public TreeGenes database resource (http://dendrome.ucdavis.edu) to include new genetic data types in addition to: environmental data, climate data, and GIS layers. Perform regular updates to page content, create new pages, develop forms, and provide graphics support. Develop queries, collect information, and serve data out through web applications. Perform regular curation of forest tree genomics and environmental data housed within the database. Assist database users with data submission and retrieval. Provide scripting support for manipulation for a variety of data types.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience with a relational database (MySQL, Oracle, PostGreSQL)
  • Experience with two or more web-based technologies (PHP, AJAX, HTML)
  • Knowledge of at least two programming languages (PERL, Python, Java, C++, etc)
  • Experience with GIS Software Development (such as ESRI ArcGIS, Google Maps)
  • Experience programming in a UNIX environment
  • Experience with at least one graphics package (i.e. Adobe Photoshop)
  • Experience teaching or training others in technical skills
  • Background in genetics, biology, and/or ecology
  • Organizational and communication skills

PREFERENCES

  • Experience with managing genetic data types in relational database
  • Experience in plant informatics
  • Experience analyzing and assessing the reliability and quality of climate and environmental data from various sources

One year position with possible annual extension
