BACKGROUND
The Center for the Study of Biological Complexity is an interdisciplinary, multi-departmental team of collaborating investigators that apply mathematical and computational systems approaches in a broad spectrum of research projects including, but not limited to comparative microbial genomics and metagenomics, the human microbial metagenomics, genomics and phylogenomics of protozoa and protozoan parasites, microbial functional genomics and bioinformatics.
The mission of the Center is to build an academic community centered on integrative discovery science, systems biology and the principles of complexity to address the challenges of the life sciences revolution of the 21st century. The Center develops and supports critical infrastructure and core capabilities at VCU in genomics, proteomics, high performance computing, bioinformatics and computational systems biology.RESPONSIBILITIES
The Center is currently recruiting a postdoctoral bioinformaticists to work on the NIAID/NHGRI-funded Vaginal Microbiome Demonstration Project and the NSF-funded Assembling the Tree of Life: Phylum Euglenozoa Project at VCU. The successful applicant will work on these projects with a large interdisciplinary team of microbiologists, molecular biologists, genomic scientists, and bioinformaticists. He or she will be a highly motivated and enthusiastic investigator with an interest and ability to work with and interpret high throughput data sets including de novo assembly of microbial genomes, analysis of microbial metagenomic rDNA sequences, assembly of whole metagenome sequence data, comparative genome analysis of bacterial and protozoan genomes, and related studies.REQUIREMENTS
- The successful applicant will have a Ph.D. in computational biology or bioinformatics, or a related field with expertise in manipulation and analysis of large data sets.
- He or she will have expertise in programming in PERL, PYTHON, C/C++, JAVA, or related programming languages.
- The successful candidate will have a comprehensive understanding of the principles of molecular biology.
PREFERENCES
- The ideal candidate will have an interest in microbial systems and an understanding of pathogenic microbiology.
- Candidates with an interest in microbial comparative genomics are particularly urged to apply.
COMPENSATION
A competitive compensation package is available. The successful candidate will also benefit from exposure to a broad spectrum of faculty, postdocs and students performing a wide spectrum of research in the Center for the Study of Biological Complexity. He or she will collaborate with teams of investigators and staff in the Next Generation Sequencing Core, the Center for High Performance Computing, and the Bioinformatics Computational Core Laboratories at VCU.LOCALE
The successful applicant will work on the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) Campus of VCU. He or she will work with personnel from the High Throughput Sequencing Lab, which currently operates four next gen (2 Illumina [HiSeq2000 and GAIIX], 2 Roche 454 Titanium instruments) and Bioinformatics Computational Core on the MCV Campus, and interact heavily with the Center for High Performance Computing on the Monroe Park Campus.HOW TO APPLY
