Opportunity: Sr. Scientific Programmer - Development Operations Engineer @ Baylor College of Medicine--Houston, TX (US)

BACKGROUND
The Human Genome Sequencing Center at Baylor College of Medicine (Baylor HGSC) is one of three large-scale sequencing centers funded by National Institutes of Health. As one of the three major centers in the United States, Baylor HGSC provides a unique opportunity to work with cutting edge genomic science. We continuously seek individuals who are looking to work in a diverse research environment that supports ongoing genomics research, improvements in sequencing technology and genome analysis.
RESPONSIBILITIES
We are looking for candidates who are passionate about automating operations, take pride in what they build, are quick learners and love to work in a challenging and fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate is a fast learner who is excited about growing into an expert. This candidate believes that Development, Testing, and Operations are all pieces of the same puzzle, and that a successful operations team needs to understand both the application itself and the development process in order to effectively do their jobs.
Duties:
- Implement the tools that will help us test, deploy, measure, monitor and scale our applications and our infrastructure.
- Continuously improve our processes and tools to ensure the best possible experience for users, from uptime to performance and reliability.
- Monitor and maintain our systems, including being part of a 24x7 on-call rotation and/or escalation path.
- Collaborate with developers to instrument the application and build management tools alongside the app to provide insight into its performance and the behaviors of our users.
- Build and maintain automation systems to reduce time for builds and deployments and to enable the team to scale its output exponentially over time.
REQUIREMENTS
- BS in CS, and/or 2+ years of experience with system administration.
- Passionately believe that every repeatable process should be automated, monitored and managed.
- Experience with shell/ perl scripting, and/or automation tools (such as cfengine, puppet, chef, or bcfg2).
- Experience managing and troubleshooting production linux infrastructures, especially running in Ruby- and/or Java- based environments.
- Ability to work in fast-paced environments with frequent releases.
- In-depth knowledge of distributed systems architectures
- Experience with large-scale storage systems (500+ TB).
- Experience using and tuning high-performance, high-bandwidth networks
- Familiarity with building and using monitoring and trend analysis tools (such as Nagios, Ganglia, Cacti, Reconnoiter, etc.)
- Experience with version control systems.
- Experience programming w/ Ruby, Python, or Java
PREFERENCES
Useful (but not required) Skills:
- Experience delivering core systems and/or kernel components in C/C++
- Experience with multithreaded concurrent processing
- Experience with SAN / block storage protocols such as SCSI, iSCSI, Fiber Channel, FCoE, SATA, and GNBD
- Experience with NAS / distributed file system protocols such as SMB, CIFS, and NFS
