    BACKGROUND

    The Human Genome Sequencing Center at Baylor College of Medicine (Baylor HGSC) is one of three large-scale sequencing centers funded by National Institutes of Health. As one of the three major centers in the United States, Baylor HGSC provides a unique opportunity to work with cutting edge genomic science. We continuously seek individuals who are looking to work in a diverse research environment that supports ongoing genomics research, improvements in sequencing technology and genome analysis.

    As sequencing technologies have evolved to enable the survey of large fractions of the genome across large numbers of samples at an affordable cost, there is a great scientific opportunity to apply insightful understanding to topics in cancer biology, genomics and disease based on deep re-sequencing data sets. This is paving the way for the promised personalized health care in the future.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    We are currently seeking a Scientific Project Coordinator for the Genomics of Cancer and Disease who will be responsible for the analysis of DNA sequencing data generated from a wide variety of cancers and other diseases. The duties will involve coordination of the activities of a group of bioinformatics developers, insuring the successful operation of a bioinformatics pipeline that discovers and annotates somatic mutations and rare polymorphisms relating to disease, the statistical analysis of human mutation and polymorphism data, and the biological interpretation of the variation in the context of the disease (mainly cancer) under study. There will be extensive interaction with the laboratory sequence production and software engineering groups within the HGSC, and also with a wide variety of external scientific collaborators.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • The successful candidate should have a strong background in molecular or cell biology, with a focus on disease-related signaling pathways.
    • Experience with bioinformatics or statistics is desired.
    • In-depth understanding of genomic data sets (DNA sequence, copy number or expression) is advantageous.
    • In this position, the candidate will need to demonstrate independent thinking and have close interactions with other members of the Center.
    • Project management experience and excellent communication skills is also necessary for this position.

    PREFERENCES

    • Desirable skills and experience include: Ph.D. in molecular biology with experience in the field of cancer, working knowledge of Unix and PERL, ability to work in a team environment, proven leadership skills, and excellent communication skills (both oral and written).
