The DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI) in Walnut Creek, CA (a division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab) has an exciting Software Developer position available. In cooperation with other members of the Production Informatics group, will design and implement software solutions and offer support for the production process spanning from sample acquisition stage to sequence data generation. Will support existing production Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and integrate third party LIMS with external applications. Position reports to the Production Informatics group lead.
Specific Job Duties:
Essential -- Design, implement, test, and deploy extensions to, and new versions of, the production process support systems including: configuration and development of the third-party LIMS system (Geneus), design, implementation, and testing of associated secondary systems and, if needed, implementation of reports for users.
- Provide responsive customer support for new and existing production process support systems, including: assisting users with the prompt resolution of data entry errors, resolution of software malfunctions and other system needs, resolution of custom user and data retrieval requests and possible weekend support of the production sequencing line.
- Follow prescribed practices for software version control, testing, and release engineering.
- Communicate regularly with customers and supervisory staff about plans, designs, and progress.
- Provide status updates in regular team meetings, and coordinate development work with other members of the Production Process Support team and (when appropriate) Production Informatics group.
- Apply analytical skills and creativity to solve diverse and challenging problems.
- Mentor and cross-train other team members in software development and design.
- Stay current with new sequencing technologies.
- Train biologists and other lab staff on how to use production process support systems.
- Analyze the impact of process, hardware or software changes on production line performance.
REQUIREMENTS
- B.S. in Computer Science or a related scientific or technical field (or equivalent experience) and a minimum of five years related experience.
- Demonstrated experience with the following programming languages: Perl.
- Demonstrated experience with database programming and interfaces, preferably in MySQL or Oracle.
- Full life-cycle software development experience with the ability to work with scientific and administrative customers to define needs and priorities.
- Ability to effectively learn and apply new technology concepts to troubleshoot and solve problems and challenges of a diverse scope.
- Effective time management, organization, and planning skills.
- Talent for working well under short deadlines and handling multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to work effectively in a diverse team environment.
PREFERENCES
- Demonstrated experience with the following: Groovy, Java, JavaScript, Jasper Reports or similar reporting framework, Perl/CGI, CVS, Subversion, bash.
- Demonstrated experience in providing support for production software systems.
- Experience developing web-based GUIs.
- Experience working with scientific users.
- Experience working with bioinformatics tools and/or analysis techniques, ideally involving next-generation sequencing platforms.
