RESPONSIBILITIES
Organization: GN-Genomics Division
The DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI) in Walnut Creek, CA (a division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab) has an exciting Bioinformatics Systems Analyst opportunity available in the Genome Biology Program. Will assist with the development of new methods for data visualization and analysis of microbial genomes and metagenomes. Will also improve and develop new tools for the representation of microbial organisms on biogeographical and other environmental metadata context sites. Will contribute as a member of a dynamic, multidisciplinary team of biologists, bioinformaticians, computer scientists and software developers. Position reports to the Genome Biology Program Leader.
Specific Job Duties:
Essential -- Collect and organize 16s rDNA data (from internal or public databases, collaborators, etc.).
- Process and analyze 16s rDNA data and metadata for the microbial species from rDNA databases such as, SILVA and Greengenes; as well as from publicly available metagenomic studies.
- Interface with end-users and collaborators to gather feedback and requirements.
- Assist with developing visualization tools for the representation and display of the 16s metadata.
- Develop a new user interface for the representation of microbial species on biogeographical context, combining a variety of sequence data and metadata
- Develop and present updates and reports at group meetings
- Support internal and external users with data exchange and custom data analysis
- Participate in preparation of publications
REQUIREMENTS
- Typically requires a Bachelor's degree in Scientific or Computational discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience. MS preferred.
- Experience with genomic/metagenomic sequence data and their associated metadata.
- Ability to work in a Linux environment and query a database using SQL.
- Ability to write basic scripts in Perl for data mining and processing.
- Some experience with JAVA and workflow systems.
- Experience in service oriented architecture environments or with ESB.
- Ability to troubleshoot basic problems and recommend actions.
- Effective time management, organization, and planning skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with team members and technical, administrative, and scientific staff.
PREFERENCES
- Experience with PHP, ADP, and/or LAMP and an object oriented language, such as C++.
- Experience utilizing Web 2.0 technologies such as AJAX, JQuery, HTML5 and CSS.
- Experience with XML and related technologies preferred.
- Experience deploying and consuming SOAP and/or REST web services preferred.
- Ability to work with bug tracking and version control software.
