    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    Organization: GN-Genomics Division

    The DOE Joint Genome Institute in Walnut Creek, CA (a division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab) has an exciting opportunity available for an experienced software / bioinformatics professional. Will serve as The Genomic Technologies Informatics Lead responsible for developing and maintaining an effective informatics infrastructure for new genomic technologies at JGI as well as coordinating informatics efforts within the sequencing and technology development groups and IT efforts with JGI IT. Will work on complex problems of a diverse scope, exercise independent judgment and select appropriate methods and techniques for solving and recommending solutions. Must demonstrate detailed knowledge and strong technical ability in full lifecycle software development, database design and access, web user interface design, development and deployment. This position reports directly to the JGI Genomic Technologies Deputy Director.

    Note: The Initial scope of the position will focus on the establishment of technical direction, infrastructure and long and short-range objectives. The future expectation is the position will serve a technical lead role. The selected candidate will be hired at the Software Developer 4 or 5 classification level depending upon the candidate's level of experience and qualifications.

    Specific Job Duties:
    Essential -
    • Plan, coordinate, and oversee informatics infrastructure for existing and new genomic technologies in the Genomic Technologies Department at JGI.
    • Develop and maintain an effective mechanism for installing, testing, and upgrading software packages for genomic technology platforms.
    • In cooperation with the Sequencing Informatics and Project Management Informatics groups, contribute to the development of an effective tracking system for sequencing projects at JGI.
    • Ensure the continuous improvement, rationalization, and management of existing informatics systems in the Genomic Technologies Department.
    • Evaluate information technology and architectural strategies needed for running effectively genomic technologies at JGI, including informatics software packages for next generation sequencing platforms, hardware infrastructure, new and advanced technologies.
    • Develop both short and long-range objectives for information systems that will help the Genomic Technologies Department meet its business objectives.
    • Establish and communicate mission, goals, and accomplishments.
    • Apply analytical skills and creativity to solve diverse problems.
    • Serve as a technical lead and key contributor called upon to troubleshoot and solve highly technical, complex problems.
    • May serve as a technical team lead.
    Marginal -
    • Participate in internal/external reviews, and in applied research to improve genome sequencing technology software and hardware infrastructure.
    • Visit other Genome Centers to identify best practices.
    • Present at external scientific meeting and work with external scientific collaborators.
    Essential duties for the Software Developer 5 -
    In addition to the job duties described above, the Software Developer 5 will:
    • Operate at a higher level of independence and responsibility when carrying out assignments.
    • Act independently to develop methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
    • Serve as a technical expert for system-wide / cross-functional teams.
    • Counsel, consult, mentor and transfer knowledge of technologies and systems throughout the organization.
    REQUIREMENTS:
    • Requires a Bachelor's in Computing Science or related field and/or equivalent experience with a minimum of 8 years related experience with large complex technological programs. Advanced degree preferred.
    • Significant experience and competencies in driving technology efforts in a large, diverse, team-oriented environment or equivalent experience.
    • Demonstrated experience managing a team of software developers in a customer support role.
    • Full life-cycle software development experience with the ability to work with scientific and administrative customers to define needs and priorities.
    • Demonstrated success designing and implementing systems and software in a scientific or technical environment.
    • Experience and knowledge in design, configuration, implementation, operation, and maintenance of computer-oriented systems such as IT infrastructure, application and operating systems software development, and database management systems.
    • Ability to champion initiatives from conceptualization through completion, detail-oriented with exceptional analytical and organizational skills and the ability to solve highly complex and technical problems.
    • Talent for working well under short deadlines and handling multiple tasks simultaneously
    • Requires strong interpersonal skills, effective communication abilities and ability to work independently to plan and carry out requirements of the position.
    Essential Qualifications for the Software Developer 5 -
    In addition to the qualifications listed above, the Software Developer 5 requires:
    • Requires a Bachelor's in Computing Science or related field and/or equivalent experience with a minimum of 12+ years related experience with large complex technological programs. Advanced degree preferred.
    • Leads and champions the establishment of technical direction, corporate approach, and methodologies for the use of specified technologies and systems.
    • Exceptional technical and analytical skills with the ability to guide and direct multiple on-going technical projects.
