    BACKGROUND:
    We are a federally-funded, Boston-based, biomedical research organization. Our Biomedical Informatics Team performs research and development to improve the way clinical science and care are conducted. Current initiatives include the development of natural language processing and machine learning technologies, methods of automated clinical quality measurement and improvement, and the development of computational platform for integrative analysis of genomic, biosample and clinical data. The multi-disciplinary team consists of a highly skilled group of PhD researchers, clinicians, systems analysts, project managers, and software developers. Resources include access to the complete medical records of over 18 million records through the world's largest installed electronic medical record system, a new 160 node high performance computing cluster, and access to incredibly challenging projects with the potential to change the way health care is delivered.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    We are seeking a Application Support Engineer to join informatics team in Jamaica Plain. This position will require a self-starting, talented engineer with strong technical skills who can effectively support our web application by identifying and resolving application, data and process problems. You will also take ownership and work with our IT organization to ensure operational excellence through backup policies, DR and contingency plans and tests, utilization monitoring, etc.

    The duties and responsibilities of the Application Support Engineer are listed below, however the candidate must anticipate and/or react to the needs of the team and organization to help contribute to our goals:
    • Provide 2nd/3rd level support to our internal web application and associated SQL databases. Diagnose, solve and provide root cause analysis for application errors, data problems, hardware failures, network and O/S issues.
    • Provide operational support to our internal web application and associated SQL databases. This may involve maintenance of configuration files/databases, configuring and running operational jobs, etc.
    • Windows Systems Administration (2003, 2008, SQL, IIS, scripting, etc...)
    • Work with IT staff to plan the installation, deployment, support and maintenance of physical and virtual server hardware and operating environments.
    • Work with IT staff to plan the Installation, deployment, support and maintenance of backup systems.
    • Create implement monitoring tools for Windows systems to ensure maximum availability and performance.
    • Evaluate and analyze systems, performance, issues and metrics in order to provide recommendations for system upgrades/changes and service improvements.
    • Coordinates with other staff on the design, implementation, operation, and maintenance of systems and network.
    • Contribute to and participate in DR planning and testing.
    • Perform application production installs.
    • Create and maintain high-quality documentation of all relevant specifications, systems, and procedures.
    • Assist in the development of processes to maintain business continuity and recovery standards for all systems and networks.
    • Performs additional related duties as required.
    REQUIREMENTS:
    A combination of experience, education, and training which substantially demonstrates the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
    • 5+ year's administrative experience with Microsoft Operating Systems and Applications in a Windows, SQL Environment.
    • Expert experience with supporting Internet and Web application products and services
    • Development experience in XML/XSL, and SQL
    • Ability to automate daily administration and user tasks
    • Scripting experience (powershell, etc...)
    • Strong business/systems analysis skills required
    • Strong team and people skills required
    • Ideal candidate is a strong team player, quality conscious, has excellent analytical, written and verbal communication skills, and is highly self motivated.

    Education & Experience:
    • College degree in Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, Information Systems Management, or equivalent professional experience
    • A minimum of four (4) years (in excess of degree requirements stated above) of progressively responsible experience in web/SQL application support and administration of information systems.
    • Pervious/current development experience a plus.
