BACKGROUND
The Center for the Study of Biological Complexity (CSBC) at VCU is recruiting a Bioinformatics Engineer II to support high throughput data generation, processing and analysis activities surrounding our Illumina HiSeq and GAIIX and Roche 454 sequencers, and our Affymetrix, Illumina and spotted array technology. The mission of Center for the Study of Biological Complexity at VCU is to maintain an academic community centered on integrative discovery science, systems biology and the principles of complexity to address the challenges of the life sciences revolution of the 21st century. Center core resources in genomics, bioinformatics and high performance computing support biological and biomedical research across all campuses of the university. We are currently recruiting a Bioinformatics Engineer II into our bioinformatics team to support continued expansion of our next generation sequencing pipelines in the Genomics Core of our Nucleic Acids Research Facilities.RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful applicant will provide applications support, analyze user application needs, and develop and implement alternative analysis solutions for the high throughput sequence and microarray analysis pipelines provided by the Nucleic Acids Research Facilities (NARF). In specific, the Bioinformatics Engineer will include:- Management and analysis of high throughput genomic data sets
- Development, maintenance, implementation of bioinformatics tools/databases
- Support of research efforts of VCU faculty using high throughput technologies
- Working productively in a team-oriented environment
REQUIREMENTS
- MS/PhD in bioinformatics, or the equivalent experience
- Expertise with LINUX, UNIX, other relevant operating systems
- Expertise in PERL, C,C++, JAVA, Python, other computer languages
- Expertise with commonly used bioinformatics algorithms and processes
- Experience with next-gen sequencing; e.g., Roche 454, Illumina, other
- Experience with high throughput microarray analysis
- Knowledge of databases (Oracle, Postgres, MySql, etc.)
- Knowledge of biological sciences and/or a desire to learn
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to collaborate across a multi-disciplinary team
- Ability to work independently
- Two years of relevant experience
PREFERENCES
- MS/PhD in relevant discipline, two years of experience
