    BACKGROUND

    We are seeking an enthusiastic bioinformatician or computer scientist to play an important role in providing bioinformatics infrastructure, tools and data management support for groundbreaking research carried out at Cancer Research UK's Cambridge Research Institute (CRI). The Institute emphasises a multi-disciplinary approach with the aim of linking the laboratory to the clinic and has state-of-the-art research facilities for over 300 scientists supported by outstanding on-site core services.

    The Bioinformatics Core works closely with Institute research teams developing techniques and providing support for analysis of data from high-throughput genomics and proteomics technologies, including next generation sequencing, microarrays and protein/peptide mass spectrometry. This is achieved through consultation on research projects, provision of data analysis and visualization tools and resources, and training.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The role will involve the following duties and responsibilities:
    • Providing operational bioinformatics support for key technologies, including high-throughput sequencing, through the maintenance and automation of data processing and QC pipelines
    • Support the deployment of bioinformatics database resources, e.g. Ensembl, and analysis and visualization tools, e.g. Galaxy, interactive genome browsers
    • Develop strategies and implement solutions for large-scale data management and experimental metadata capture
    • Contribute to the implementation of robust data analysis pipelines, working with bioinformatics analysts in the Core, and the efficient execution of these pipelines on the high-performance computing cluster located at CRI

    REQUIREMENTS

    You will have a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or a numerate/life sciences discipline with significant experience in computer programming (e.g. Perl, Python, Java). You should have excellent Unix skills and ideally you will have experience working with relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL) and in data processing in a HPC cluster environment. A working knowledge and practical experience of a range of bioinformatics software tools and database resources would be an advantage.

    The role requires excellent communication skills, involving regular interaction with research scientists and other bioinformaticians as well as contributing to training materials and courses. You will need to be highly organized with good time management skills to support multiple projects and tasks concurrently, with the ability to work well in a team.

    GBP 28,150 - 38,250 per annum inclusive
