    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    We have exciting opportunities for experienced informatics scientists to impact drug projects & global capability builds working as part of a world leading, global informatics organisation. As part of the newly formed R&D Information department, the Discovery Informatics capability has a mandate to address the significant data management, integration and analysis challenges at all stages of drug discovery/early development, including target discovery, lead identification & optimisation, compound safety analysis & prediction, biomarker discovery and patient/disease segmentation. A key goal of the Discovery Informatics Practice is the develop the skills, content and tools needed to address these challenges, in particular to support 2 key strategic AZ initiatives in Predictive Science and Personalised Healthcare.

    We are seeking experienced, multi-talented informaticians to join our team, who are able to contribute to and lead in all aspects of Discovery Informatics delivery. In addition, successful candidates will be expected to be adaptable, able to contribute to wide range of R&D informatics activities, including direct drug R&D project information support, global informatics capability development as well as specific platform build activities. We have a number of informatics positions available, at varying levels of seniority depending on experience and skills. Successful candidates will be expected to work in cross functional teams with scientists, developers and informaticians/knowledge engineers /information scientists supporting both clinical and discovery activities. These positions are open to internal and external applicants and may be based at one or more of our R&D centres in Sweden, United Kingdom and North America.

    Duties:
    • Work with drug R&D projects identifying and delivering informatics solutions to address data management, analysis and information interpretation challenges
    • Proactively engage and lead in knowledge sharing and peer support to build R&D knowledge and expertise in the tools and techniques critical to Informatics/Information Science
    • Work with software developers / architects to rapidly and iteratively develop generic tools and solutions to address the needs of drug discovery priority projects
    • Contribute to and lead local and global informatics projects or service areas
    • Contribute to the overall Informatics strategy and architecture
    • Identify and lead engagements with external partners in the delivery of informatics components
    • Work collaboratively with Informaticians/Information Scientists to deliver scientific information platforms, database systems, processes, tools and techniques to solve scientific problems
    • Actively support the portfolio life-cycle of informatics/ISA initiatives, programmes, projects and services to maximise effective use of scientific information in the discovery and development business
    • Support and foster innovative information solutions across informatics community.
    • Lead and develop less experienced staff locally in best practice and skills development
    • Promote a positive team climate of continuous improvement and develop and motivate peers to deliver competitive advantage through clear linkages between investment in people and business performance.
    • Build knowledge and expertise of the pharma industry and informatics trends.
    • Promote AZ's information capabilities and reputation through external publications and presentations.
    REQUIREMENTS:
    • Proven record of delivering informatics approaches, skills and tools to drug projects
    • Bachelors degree in a Life Science, Computer Science or equivalent experience
    • Excellent communication skills and facilitation skills with the ability to work with others to achieve objectives
    • Programming/scripting skills and experience (e.g. Perl & CGI, Python, UNIX shell scripting, Java, JavaScript, Excel VBA, Pipeline Pilot, etc.)
    • Database and semantic skills and experience (e.g. Oracle, MySql, RDF/Triple stores/SPARQL, etc.)
    • Experience in one or more scientific domains (e.g. Chemistry, Biology, Pharmacology, Toxicology, Translational Science, Clinical Science, Healthcare, etc.)
    • Experience of working in global information delivery or tool development projects
    • Expertise in one or more discovery informatics capabilities, such as
    Bioinformatics supporting:
    • * Genomics, Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), Imaging & Proteomics
    • * Target Identification & Validation
    • * Biomarker Identification & Validation
    • * Patient selection
    • * Compound safety prediction & translation
    • Cheminformatics supporting:
    • * Compound Design, Make, Test, Analyse cycles
    • * Compound synthesis
    • * In vitro/in vivo screening workflows
    • Modeling & Simulation supporting:
    • * DMPK Modeling
    • * Pathway analysis
    • * Physiological modeling
    PREFERENCES:
    • MSc or PhD in Bio/Chem/Medical Informatics or related field.
    • Scientific domain knowledge and experience in at least one of the following therapeutics area: Oncology, Neuroscience(CNS/Pain), Cardio Vascular, Gastrointestinal, Infection, Respiratory & Inflammation.
    • Understanding of the external environment (both within and beyond the pharmaceutical industry)
    • Experience of working within an R&D drug project
    LOCALE:
    This is a global role that can be done from any AstraZeneca R&D site in UK, US or Sweden
