OVERVIEW
The Center for Study of Biological Complexity (CSBC) at Virginia Commonwealth University (http://www.vcu.edu/csbc) invites applications for a full-time tenure track position in Bioinformatics. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Professor. The successful candidate will hold a PhD in a relevant field, and have a demonstrated ability to develop a strong, internationally recognized, independent and innovative research program.
He or she will collaborate with and complement the strengths of existing diverse CSBC faculty holding appointments in VCU's Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Engineering, Pharmacy and the Humanities and Sciences, in synergistic and complementary interdisciplinary research efforts including applying bioinformatics approaches to the study of complex biological systems including microbial genomics or systematics, host-pathogen interactions, metagenomics, comparative genomics and related areas. The successful candidate will also provide leadership and enthusiasm in our efforts to guide the next generation of bioinformaticists, through innovative undergraduate and graduate courses and research mentoring.
Preference will be given to individuals exhibiting skills in algorithm design and development for the analysis, interpretation, and visualization of multi-scale/multi-dimensional biological datasets, simulation of complex biological systems, or other relevant areas of computational biology and bioinformatics.RESPONSIBILITIES
- The successful candidate will develop a vigorous, independent and extramurally funded research program.
- He or she will provide leadership in undergraduate and graduate training in bioinformatics and systems biology.
- He or she will develop a graduate course in the area of algorithm design and development for the analysis, interpretation, and visualization of multi-scale/multi-dimensional biological datasets, simulation of complex biological systems, or other relevant areas of computational biology and bioinformatics.
- He or she will take advantage of the CSBC's recent investments in functional genomics, next generation sequencing, high performance computing, and related technologies.
- He or she will be expected to form new interactive and interdisciplinary projects in collaboration with the existing strong cadre of CSBC investigators.
REQUIREMENTS
- The successful applicant will have a PhD or the equivalent doctoral degree and relevant experience.
- The ideal applicant will have an established research program that will complement existing CSBC faculty strengths in microbial genomics, pathogen-host interaction, and synthetic biology.
- Candidates must have experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
