    BACKGROUND

The Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology (MPIIB), Department of Molecular Biology, Berlin, Germany, is seeking for the earliest possible start date a PhD Student in Bioinformatics for a project developing bioinformatics tools and for the analysis of deep sequencing data of host (epi-)genetic modifications of the human genome.

Deep sequencing of human and pathogen derived samples leads to sizable data sets, demanding for accurate and comprehensive analysis. We seek a highly motivated candidate to contribute to challenging projects and to establish a flexible data analysis pipeline based on open-source platforms. In particular, new bioinformatics tools for deep sequencing data analysis and quality control need to be developed.

    REQUIREMENTS

The successful candidate will have a diploma or master's degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics or Engineering. Candidates should be proficient in UNIX (Linux), at least one scripting language (e.g. Python or Perl) and the statistics package R/Bioconductor. Familiarity with HPC environments and knowledge of high-level languages (Java, C++) and SQL databases is desirable, as is expertise in bioinformatics databases. Additionally, experience with NGS data is highly desirable. Familiarity with computational work should be complemented by a good understanding of biological questions and data sets. Excellent communication and team player skills are indispensable.

    TERMS

The successful candidate will work as part of an innovative, multidisciplinary and dynamic research team with state-of-the-art facilities, located within a vibrant city environment. The PhD Project will be conducted in close collaboration with professional experts. PhD training and position will be offered for up to three years.

The Max Planck Society is committed to employing more handicapped individuals and especially encourages them to apply. The Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.

    HOW TO APPLY

Applicants should send a cover letter, CV, publication list and names and addresses of at least three referees exclusively via email to job[at]mpiib-berlin.mpg.de with the keyword PhD-Bioinf-Deepseq.
