    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.

    The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute (WTSI) a world leader in genomic research and has played a major role in sequencing the human genome and characterising patterns of human sequence variation. Applications are invited for a senior bioinformatician to join the Genetic Epidemiology group at WTSI. The group has a strong focus on research in sub-Saharan Africa, including population-based studies of chronic diseases. The successful candidate will be expected to address bioinformatics, programming and statistical needs in relation to developing and maintaining research databases for genomic sequencing and epidemiological studies, and maintaining web-based research resources. The post-holder will be required to interact with WTSI systems teams, as well as international research groups, and support the work of group members.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Applicants will have a numerate first degree (natural sciences, maths, statistics or computer science), and comprehensive knowledge of relevant algorithms and software tools. They will have a postgraduate degree (masters/PhD) in statistics, bioinformatics, computational biology or a related discipline. Demonstrated programming skills in Perl, Java and/or C/C++ are required. The post-holder will also need relevant experience in database development and website development for biological data. It is essential that the candidate has clear communication skills with the ability to present methodologies and results succinctly, the ability to work within a team, and to provide advice, training and support for researchers.

    PREFERENCES

    Familiarity with Linux network/server administration would also be an advantage, as would proficiency in the use of relational databases, applicable knowledge of specific technical products (Python, Java, SQL, ORMs, Platform LSF, Apache HTTP Server).

    COMPENSATION

    Salary GBP 27316 to GBP 37690 dependent on experience.
