    BACKGROUND

    The Computational Genomics Team is responsible for implementing and executing the high-throughout analysis of annotation pipelines at The Genome Analysis Centre (TGAC). The activities of the team include the generation of gene sets and the implementation of functional and variation analyses including genotype-to-phenotype association studies. The team will adapt the current annotation packages and develop tools for novel bioinformatics applications in the context of next generation sequencing. The team will also develop the software and underlying databases to support the manipulation of assemblies and the submission of the annotation to the public repositories. The Computational Genomics Team will work on the presentation of the data and visualisation tools that will be used to inform scientists and collaborators about the sequences and annotation generated at TGAC.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The aim of this role is to develop and deploy the software systems for the high-throughput analysis of sequences from viral samples, and the implementation of novel methods for metaviromics. The goal is to implement automatic pipelines that can handle the data efficiently using a last generation computing cluster. This position offers an excellent opportunity to be involved with the most advanced sequencing technologies working alongside World-Class scientists. The activities of the Computational Genomics team revolve around the analysis of large genomics dataset implemented through optimised hardware and specialised software packages. These pipelines will generate high-quality data for a variety of projects including whole-genome analysis and population-based studies. One of the challenges of this role is to work on novel methods that can take full advantage of the latest technologies to be applied to the study of viral genomics.

    REQUIREMENTS

    The candidate will have an MSc in Bioinformatics and a strong background in data modelling and programming with a particular emphasis in annotation software packages. Experience with statistical methods would be desirable. The successful candidate will be proactive with ability to make autonomous decisions, have good interpersonal skills and work well as part of a team. They will have excellent communication skills with a commitment to quality and attention to detail.
